3 THINGS YOU SHOULD HAVE IN YOUR

ARTIST PORTFOLIO

22nd June 2022 | Image Curators Advisory
As an artist, you will want to market yourself in the best possible way. Your portfolio needs to be professional and show the quality of your art and skills to anyone who looks at it.

A portfolio of an artist should ALWAYS be tailored to the recipient. Spend time thinking about who is going to view your portfolio and reading the criteria if they are available.

However, your portfolio should always include the following 3 things.

1) High quality images

Avoid blurry and badly cropped images. You can add a profile picture in the about page, but for the rest of the portfolio (both digital and analog) don't include yourself standing next to your artwork, parts of the background, or any other decorations that are not part of your art. In this way you are directing the attention to your work solely.

Remember, if the quality of your photos isn't good, or the lighting is poor, this will make you appear unprofessional.

2) At least one cohesive series of artworks

Your portfolio should look organised and polished in order to make clear what you have been working on and give a sense of direction in your practice.

You can make a selection of the most recent works and those you are currently working on. It is important that you show what your art is and why you believe it's worth paying attention to.

3) A clear artist biography & statement
An artist biography needs to talk about your history and how your life events have influenced your art, therefore is written in 3rd person. Meanwhile, written in 1st person, an artist statement can be a paragraph describing your artistic research and method(s).

As for any written content, you need to make sure that you have included the most relevant and important information about yourself. Remember that this is a presentational piece and that after viewing your art, your biography will be the next second thing that people will check. Keep it relevant and up to date with where you currently are in your artistic journey.

This level of attention shows that you are a professional artist and serious about your career.
