JOE WEBSTER

Joe Webster is a contemporary British plein-air painter who works in acrylics and mixed media, blending landscape painting with graffiti.

Webster studied with the renowned artist Carole Vincent, earned his foundation degree in Art & Design at Falmouth College of Arts and received a BA Hons degree in Contemporary Arts at Nottingham Trent University in 2002. He further deepened his studies with a Postgraduate Certificate in Art from Exeter University.

Webster paints en plein air using acrylics and water-soluble materials that work in direct dialogue with water in the environment, capturing the impact of weather conditions on the natural landscape and the human experience of being part of the unpredictable changes of nature. Webster incorporates techniques borrowed from Street Art, using permanent markers and spray paint to layer and superimpose graffiti into his vigorous brushstrokes.

Through his textured, rapid brushstrokes and urban mark-making, Webster conveys a sense of urgency, bringing the viewer’s attention to the present through a conscious social and political process that calls for a positive change in the man-nature relationship. The artist invites us to intimately experience and celebrate the beauty, the vigour, and the diversity of the natural world and to rekindle our long-lost connection with Mother Earth.

Webster has extensively exhibited in the UK, in Portugal and in Australia. In 2016, he received the South West Academy’s Whitespace Award and in 2018 he published his first monograph titled Living Canvas. His artworks are held in private collections in the UK, Spain, Portugal, France, Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, the Philippines, Malaysia, Australia, Brazil, Canada, and the USA.

Joe Webster currently works and lives in Devon, UK.
